Mary Travers, 1936-2009

I was very saddened to learn of the death of Mary Travers, singer from Peter, Paul and Mary. In addition to a wonderful voice, Mary had an incredible spirit, and even after leukemia treatments was able to perform, as she did for this photograph. See the original at Paul Scharff Photography.com.

Senator Edward M. Kennedy, D-MA, February 22, 1932 – August 25, 2009

This portrait of Ted Kennedy was taken on May 25, 2007. No matter what side of the aisle you sit, you have to admire the Senator's legislative compassion and personal courage in his 77 years. See the original at Paul Scharff Photography.com.

The largest Fourth of July fireworks in the entire New York metro area outside of the Macy's display takes place in nearby Red Bank, NJ. Q104.3, New York's most-listen-to rock station, plays music that the fireworks are synchronized to. In addition to it being broadcast on millions of radios in the tri-state area, it is piped all through Red Bank so people can see the fireworks in context. These fireworks feature some very unusual designs, such as these "flowers" that lit up the sky last night. For more pictures of fireworks, visit Paul Scharff Photography.com.

Here's another building I shot on the way to the dentist last week. From this perspective, you'd not necessarily know it was right in the heart of Manhattan, because you can't see any other buildings next to it. For more pictures of buildings, visit Paul Scharff Photography.com.

This interesting building is called the Lipstick building. It's oval in shape and was designed by John Burgee Architects with Philip Johnson. It was completed in 1986 and has 34 floors. The building receives its name from its shape and color, which resemble a tube of lipstick. In addition to its interesting oval shape, it has a nice reflection, showing other buildings in the area, as seen here. For more pictures of Manhattan, visit Paul Scharff Photography.com.

Today on the way to the dentist, I passed East 53rd Street in Manhattan. There are a lot of skyscrapers there, mostly modern, and mostly glass and steel. But there are some interesting designs nonetheless. Here's one, and we'll follow with others for the next several days. For more pictures of New York City, visit Paul Scharff Photography.com.

Sunsets are always pretty, but they're particularly nice in the summer, when you can stay outside and watch them descend over the water. Sandy Hook has the rare benefit of being one of the few places in the United States where you can watch the sun rise over the water, and then set over the water, without changing position. For more pictures of sunsets, visit Paul Scharff Photography.com.

We just learned that at least six dolphins are back on the Jersey Shore. You may recall that last year 16 dolphins visited from June 10 until at least late December when I last saw them here. Of that group, some died and some were seen leaving the area. On Sunday, six were discovered, and photos will determine whether these six are part of last year's pod or new ones. But we're very excited about it all. Here's one from last year until I can get new shots. For more pictures of dolphins, visit Paul Scharff Photography.com.

I've had a groundhog living in my back yard for several years. I don't know if it's the same groundhog, or if they rotate in and out, but there has always been one. But yesterday I saw not one, but four -- a mother and three youngsters. One of the kids scurried away before I could grab this, but the other two posed with Mom. My photos are now also for sale at In The Garden in Highlands, NJ. In The Garden has an amazing assortment of plants and flowers for sale. Here's one last building selected from over 50 I took of the Florida International University campus last year. The palm trees are stunning enough, but then they cast these dancing shadows on the building to create a cacophony of beauty as seen here. Yesterday's Photo of the Day showed a picture I took of the 8th best beach of 2009, compiled by Florida International University. Just one notch lower is this beach -- Coast Guard Beach in Cape Cod, MA. As I stated yesterday, I've seen a lot of photos of that beach, but this one's my favorite, taken for my book, Cape Cod: A Photographic Portrait.
