Mary Travers, 1936-2009

I was very saddened to learn of the death of Mary Travers, singer from Peter, Paul and Mary. In addition to a wonderful voice, Mary had an incredible spirit, and even after leukemia treatments was able to perform, as she did for this photograph. See the original at Paul Scharff Photography.com.

On July 4, after watching fireworks from two neighboring New Jersey locations, I went to New York to view the Macy's fireworks display. They were launched from a barge on the Hudson River. The largest Fourth of July fireworks in the entire New York metro area outside of the Macy's display takes place in nearby Red Bank, NJ. Q104.3, New York's most-listen-to rock station, plays music that the fireworks are synchronized to. In addition to it being broadcast on millions of radios in the tri-state area, it is piped all through Red Bank so people can see the fireworks in context. This interesting building is called the Lipstick building. It's oval in shape and was designed by John Burgee Architects with Philip Johnson. It was completed in 1986 and has 34 floors. The building receives its name from its shape and color, which resemble a tube of lipstick. We just learned that at least six dolphins are back on the Jersey Shore. You may recall that last year 16 dolphins visited from June 10 until at least late December when I last saw them here. Of that group, some died and some were seen leaving the area. On Sunday, six were discovered, and photos will determine whether these six are part of last year's pod or new ones. This year, as in every year, the list of top 10 beaches was announced by Florida International University's Laboratory for Coastal Research. This list has been compiled annually since 1991 using 50 criteria, including water quality and temperature, cleanliness, weather, sand, safety and facilities. This year, the Number 8 beach was Cape Florida State Park in Key Biscayne. The Associated Press used a photo of the beach and the lighthouse for their article on the listings, but it wasn't my favorite photograph. I finally succumbed and mowed my lawn to officially start the grass-cutting season. Happily, I have a small back yard, and what there is is taken up by a pool and a gazebo. So a full mow is just a 20 minute task. I live on a very steep hill and it's too cumbersome to move the mower from the back yard to the front yard, so the front is all garden. In this second example of work from a 12-page feature in this month's issue of Digital Photographer magazine discussed yesterday, I wrote, It's not just the sunset, it's the afterglow. As the sun was setting, the sky got nicer and nicer. And just as it drifted below the horizon, the backlight on the clouds created not just a beautiful sky, but a wonderful reflection in the water below. This shot was taken on Sandy Hook, NJ. In this month's issue of Digital Photographer magazine, I provide expert advice in a 12-page feature on how to shoot water. One of the shots in there is this one -- the skyline of Miami. In my notes in the article about this shot, I write, Use a long shutter speed. Or don't. Some people would have used a 5-10 second shutter speed to blur out all the water, providing a nice dreamy effect to the shot. It's a good technique to try, which I did, but I preferred this shot with a shorter shutter speed, which froze the choppy water and gave the water a more natural look. There's a new toothbrush out that's called the Ionic ProClean toothbrush. It eliminates plaque by temporarily changing the enamel from its typical negative charge to a temporary positive charge so that plaque can be lifted away by the brush. What makes it unusual is that it's taken from the South tower of Twin Lights -- the tower that's off-limits to the public. Most photographs are taken from the North tower, and they're certainly dramatic enough. But to get the other tower in the photo, you have to look South towards Sea Bright -- still a dramatic photo in its own way. But this shot shows the inside of one tower, the entirety of another tower, and Sandy Hook stretching North to New York City. Woodrow Wilson Hall on the campus of Monmouth University was re-built in 1929 at a cost of $10.5 million after the original structure was destroyed by fire in 1927. It was known as the Summer White House after President Woodrow Wilson used it as the presidential summer home during the campaign of 1916. The new construction incorporated limestone, steel, concrete, and 50 varieties of Italian marble. It is an architectural marvel, and here is just one example. Last weekend I visited an obedience show for dogs. I was impressed with the performance of these dogs, as well as their owners who are clearly very dedicated to them. Every Passover I like to take a shot of the Pascal Full Moon. Full moons don't usually make the best moon photos, because the craters are less visible with the sun shining straight on it than they are when the sun illuminates the moon from the side instead. But there's still something very dramatic about the full moon right in your face. For this shot, I put a 2x teleconverter on a 500mm lens.
