Here's one last building selected from over 50 I took of the Florida International University campus last year. The palm trees are stunning enough, but then they cast these dancing shadows on the building to create a cacophony of beauty as seen here. For more pictures of palm trees, visit Paul Scharff Photography.com.

The annual list of Top Ten Beaches comes from Florida International University's Laboratory for Coastal Research. Florida International University has one of the most spectacular campuses I've ever seen, and I had the privilege of shooting it last year. Here's how it looks as you first enter it. Yesterday's Photo of the Day showed a picture I took of the 8th best beach of 2009, compiled by Florida International University. Just one notch lower is this beach -- Coast Guard Beach in Cape Cod, MA. As I stated yesterday, I've seen a lot of photos of that beach, but this one's my favorite, taken for my book, Cape Cod: A Photographic Portrait. For more pictures of beaches, visit Paul Scharff Photography.com.

This year, as in every year, the list of top 10 beaches was announced by Florida International University's Laboratory for Coastal Research. This list has been compiled annually since 1991 using 50 criteria, including water quality and temperature, cleanliness, weather, sand, safety and facilities. This year, the Number 8 beach was Cape Florida State Park in Key Biscayne. The Associated Press used a photo of the beach and the lighthouse for their article on the listings, but it wasn't my favorite photograph. My favorite just happened to be one I shot for the Park Service last year, seen here, which will be appearing in my next book. For more pictures of lighthouses, visit Paul Scharff Photography.com.

For Memorial Day this year, I thought I would go through my photo collection and find a shot of a flag. But I didn't have to search at all: this shot came courtesy of the Highlands, NJ Memorial Day Parade that took place on Saturday. For more pictures of flags, visit Paul Scharff Photography.com.

Today marks the official start of Memorial Day weekend, and ergo, the beginning of Summer. And that was confirmed yesterday when I looked out my window and saw the very first tow plane of the summer. For more pictures of beaches, visit Paul Scharff Photography.com.

Someone wrote in asking where to take good photos of New York City. One location is not in New York at all, but in New Jersey, where I took this shot for a client in Tokyo. For more pictures of New York, visit Paul Scharff Photography.com.

If you take a ton of wine glasses and shoot them very close up, you get an enormous collection of light and dark reflections that create an almost-abstract photo. For more abstract photos, visit Paul Scharff Photography.com.

Paths in dunes are always pretty -- in part because you know you'll be arriving at the ocean on the other end. This one looks like it was taken in Cape Cod, Delaware, or in the Carolinas, but it's actually Miami Beach. For more pictures of Miami Beach, visit Paul Scharff Photography.com.

Sandy Hook, NJ is getting more crowded, and more green, as summer continues in its forward path. Here's how it looked at the end of summer when the first color of red was emerging. For more pictures of Sandy Hook, visit Paul Scharff Photography.com.

Looming clouds usually look very threatening -- unless they take place at sunset, when they provide nice contrast to the orange sky. For more pictures of sunsets, visit Paul Scharff Photography.com.

Here's one last shot of the library at The Lotos Club in New York City. With a picture this small, it's hard to tell how large it is, but if you look at the walls, you'll see books are stacked eight shelves high. That's a lot of books! I finally succumbed and mowed my lawn to officially start the grass-cutting season. Happily, I have a small back yard, and what there is is taken up by a pool and a gazebo. So a full mow is just a 20 minute task. I live on a very steep hill and it's too cumbersome to move the mower from the back yard to the front yard, so the front is all garden. For more pictures of grass, visit Paul Scharff Photography.com.
