Photo Of The Day: March 31, 2008

Today I am dropping off work being exhibited at the 2008 Monmouth Festival of the Arts. This will be one of the pieces for sale. It's a shot under the Williamsburg Bridge in New York on a very foggy night -- one that provided an almost surreal emotion and an unusually peaceful sound in the big city. For more shots of New York, visit Paul Scharff Photography.com.

With a woman still (at least as of today) a contender for the position of President of the United States, it's almost unbelievable that this poor woman was listed only as "the widow of the late Joseph A. Bunting" when she died in 1887. He wasn't even alive when she died, and yet she died nameless herself. For more pictures taken in the subsequent two centuries, visit Paul Scharff Photography.com.

Today I am in New Hampshire celebrating my father's birthday. I had the chance to do a photo shoot up here over the summer, which has yielded a brand new gallery on Paul Scharff Photography.com. Here is one of the shots from it.

This day last year, Saturn was very close to the moon. I learned of this at the very last minute but in time to get this shot, which is just clear enough to show the rings of Saturn when viewed at full size. It was very exciting to see, topped only by another view of Saturn this year, which we'll show in a future Photo Of The Day. For more photos of the moon, visit Paul Scharff Photography.com.

One nice thing about Spring in New York is that the trees are in their early blooming stage. That means that you get the beautiful almost chartreuse-like green color to them, and yet you can see through them to remind you that you're still in New York City. Here's how it looks on Central Park South. For more photos of New York, go to PaulScharffPhotography.com.

The spring continues in full force here in New Jersey. The forsythia are out (selected areas only; call for showtimes), the weeping cherry has its first blossoms, and the purple crocus in the front yard, which waited until the yellow ones had already appeared nearby, finally took the stage as seen here. For more pictures of flowers, go to PaulScharffPhotography.com.

As the sun begins to shift direction, it is more directly rising over the ocean here in New Jersey, bathing the surroundings with a wonderfully golden light. Here's a similar look taken last October in North Carolina. For other photos from North Carolina, go to PaulScharffPhotography.com.

It's always exciting when something is being baked, particularly when it's blueberry cheesecake. Here's how one looked today before yours truly dived into it. For more shots of food, look for a new gallery coming soon at PaulScharffPhotography.com.

Although today wasn't the first day of Spring as it usually is on March 21st (it was yesterday, the 20th), it was the first full day of Spring. And what better proof of there of Spring than a robin? For more animal photos, go to PaulScharffPhotography.com.

On the last day of Winter, we are reminded that there's no bad season to take a picnic break at the ocean. Tomorrow, a new season begins. To see more photos of the ocean, go to PaulScharffPhotography.com.

Over the weekend the first indications of Spring started to arrive at my house -- barely. But going down the road just a few houses revealed Spring in its full glory with these beautiful yellow crocuses. For more photos of flowers, go to PaulScharffPhotography.com.

Sunday mornings are almost synonymous with coffee. A few years ago, I was about to grind my beans for my Sunday morning brew when I noticed how nice the beans looked right in the grinder. Adding a bit of artificial light from the left to complement the natural light, I went in close to get this result. For more food photos, go to PaulScharffPhotography.com.

Today I am shooting a wedding in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh has a beautiful skyline, sculpted by three rivers which converge at a single point. Here how it looked one night at dusk when I was there to see the full moon rise above it. For shots of other locations, go to PaulScharffPhotography.com.

After hearing Got To Get You Into My Life on American Idol this week, I thought of Earth, Wind & Fire. They created the completely-revamped arrangement played on Idol and had the only hit from the otherwise unsuccessful Sgt. Pepper movie in 1978. Here's a shot of Earth, Wind & Fire performing in concert that I dusted off from the archives. For other concert photos, go to PaulScharffPhotography.com.

With the seasons changing, snow that does land doesn't stay. Here's a recent shot taken early in the morning after a recent snowfall in the Berkshire Mountains. The snow was melting by the moment -- and one hour later, there was none to be seen. For other shots of the Berkshires, go to PaulScharffPhotography.com.

I just learned that The Helmsley Park Lane Hotel is going to be sold. It's an old, stately hotel right on Central Park in New York City. Several months ago I had the pleasure of having dinner there, and when I left, I stood in front of the hotel for over half an hour to find the one moment when there was no traffic - people or automobiles - to capture its quiet, elegant glory. For other shots of buildings at night, go to PaulScharffPhotography.com.

Over the weekend I was at a Realtor and there was a nice bouquet of tulips on the desk. Well, a bouquet is a bouquet. So for a different perspective, I decided to zoom in close on one hero tulip and let the surrounding flowers fade into a nice soft background blur. For more flowers, go to PaulScharffPhotography.com.
